Tips on Creating Scroll- Stopping Social Media Content
With new trends emerging daily, and generations of consumers with ever-shrinking attention spans, there’s a lot of noise and competition in the digital realm–especially on social media.
So, what does a business account have to do these days to get a viewer to stop their endless scrolling, and notice all the good you have to offer? This white paper will address some of the best tips we’ve uncovered during our decade-plus of client work.
1. Get (your graphics) moving
There’s a reason that Times Square is filled with all those bright, twinkling colors: All that glitz captures your eye and attention! Think of a user scrolling through their social media feed kind of like somebody strolling down Broadway. In an environment rife with competition, what’s going to stand out and inspire engagement? Movement!
Whenever you have a chance to do so, consider adding animated elements to your social media posts. You truly don’t need to commit to a highly-produced piece of theatrical genius; what matters most is the action and a clever concept. We encourage our clients to experiment with short video clips and gifs with movement to see which formats generate the most interaction for their accounts.
Text-only posts can very easily get lost in a sea of content, and so it’s best to always include at the very least some form of relevant imagery. In fact, Twitter has reported that posts with gifs get 55 percent more engagement than those without. Even if you’re not keen on creating a video or gif, don’t neglect imagery entirely. A photo is much better than nothing!
2. Incentivize with a potential price
With new trends emerging daily, and generations of consumers with ever-shrinking attention spans, there’s a lot of noise and competition in the digital realm–especially on social media.

3. Keep an eye on what’s trending
In today’s social media climate, what we like to call “memefication” runs rampant. That is, internet users take a moment in pop culture and find many ways to create witty graphics or phrases inspired by that moment.
In recent history, popular examples include Bernie Sanders’ 2021 Presidential Inauguration outfit taking on a life of its own in precarious situations, and the explosion of tongue-in-cheek “CDC recommends” chatter on Twitter inspired by their shortening of COVID-19 quarantine protocols.
When these memes come on to the scene, joining the conversation from your business’s account can be a great way to experience broader awareness and get in front of an audience that may not have yet had the chance to discover what you can offer them.
It’s not necessary to participate in every trend that bubbles up online, but it is helpful to keep an eye out on what’s gaining popularity so that you can decide if any might make sense for your business to participate in. Keep in mind that some moments in pop culture may not align with your values as a brand, and avoid jumping in just for the sake of it.
4. Be Authentic
Yes, this is going to sound cliché, but it really is true: It’s always worth it to create social media content that reflects the core of your brand, authentically. By paying attention to who you are as a business and what you stand for, you’ll naturally attract the type of person you want to engage with your page, and ultimately, the type of person who could turn into a customer.
In our client work, we often start with a deep dive into our partners’ ideal customer persona, and use that to inform and shape the types of content that will resonate best with their unique audience of current and future customers. It may seem like a huge lift initially, but it makes every step of building and boosting a fresh social media presence so much easier along the way.
LET THEM COME TO YOU!
Social media is just as much a powerful inbound marketing tool as it is a platform for people with shared interests to learn from and grow with one another. Allow your business accounts to be the place where this conversation can happen organically, and you’ll likely see the payoff in awareness, sentiment, and sales.
