Our Favorite Ads from Super Bowl 2020
There are a few key groups of people who participate in Super Bowl festivities: those who care excited for the game, those who love the chance to enjoy a bunch of snacks, and those who can’t wait to watch the commercials. For those who fall into the commercial category - you’re in luck!
There were so many different varieties of Super Bowl commercials this year, with some relying on quick wit and humor, and others leaning on love and nostalgia. We especially loved how brands tied their Super Bowl commercials into their other forms of digital communications, ensuring a cohesive and memorable experience for viewers.
Read on for our favorite ads from Super Bowl 2020.
Google’s “Loretta”
Google’s Super Bowl commercial this year used a simple voice-over to highlight all of the features of its virtual assistant in a memorable, achingly beautiful way. In the commercial, an elderly man uses Google to bring back memories of his late wife, Loretta. He speaks to the device, and Google helps him to see photographs of them together, and even reminisce with clips of their favorite movie.
This commercial is emotional storytelling at its finest. It’s so gorgeously done, and relatable to so many people. In fact, USA Today reports that the man in the ad is, in fact, the real-life grandfather of an actual Google employee. We love it even more knowing that true stories were used as inspiration.
Hyundai’s “Smaht Pahk”
Hyundai’s wicked funny “Smaht Pahk” spot pokes just the right amount of fun at the Boston accent, highlighting the Sonata’s remote parking assist feature through a conversation between Chris Evans, John Krasinski, Rachel Dratch, and David “Big Papi” Ortiz. It’s lighthearted, entertaining, and just plain fun. A touchdown for sure.
Squarespace’s “Winona in Winona”
Winona Ryder has been in the entertainment industry for decades, and has a lovable quirkiness to her personality that makes people really enjoy watching her. She’s a pretty great match for Squarespace, a website builder that, by nature, encourages uniqueness and individuality. The brief spot features Winona in the town of Winona, Minnesota, building a website out in the snow, because, well, “having a website makes it real.”
Beyond the 30-second spot that aired, Squarespace also released a longer version and an actual “Welcome to Winona” website featuring all things Winona - Ryder and the town.
Weathertech’s “Lucky Dog”
Weather Tech’s 2019 Super Bowl commercial featured a few lovable furry friends as it featured its line of Pet Comfort products, and in 2020, they told the special story of Scout, one of the stars of its 2019 spot. The 2020 commercial reintroduced sweet Scout as a cancer survivor, highlighting all of the amazing ways the team at The University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine helped him to survive - and how the program’s cutting edge research can help other pets as well.
The commercial didn’t push any Weathertech products; in fact, its call to action was to donate to the university that saved Scout’s life. This was genius positioning, and the fact that it encouraged people to give back instead of pay up was a very special way to do a Super Bowl spot.
Tide’s “Laundry Later”
With all the Super Bowl snacking going on, spills (and stains) are bound to happen. Tide picked smart placement and timing to introduce its new Heavy Duty Tide POWER PODS®, which claim that stains can now wait until later. The “Laundry Later” series of ads attempts to clarify just how long a wait it is until later, with four commercial spots and even a mention during the game.
We love how the narrative extended throughout the game, delighting viewers with another piece of the story. It’s a great example of integrated, episodic excellence - and adding a little star power by way of Charlie Day and Emily Hampshire certainly helped, too.
