“Every day is Halloween, isn’t it? For some of us….” – Tim Burton
Boo! Did we scare you? Ah, the Halloween season. It’s all about spooky fun, trick-or-treat ideas, glowing jack-o-lanterns…in a nutshell – Halloween can be downright fun!
It’s also the perfect time to re-“VAMP” your online and social media platforms – get into the haunted season. Test those spooktacular social media ideas, as Halloween is a holiday that crosses cultural and age demographics – many celebrate Halloween in some form or fashion. Tap into that spirit!
First, let’s take a look at your website. There are some clues that are pretty easy to recognize if the site needs a revamp. The big one? Is your website responsive..or in a nutshell, can your current website be viewed from Smartphones and Ipads? Gone are the days where your site is just being looked at from laptops or large computers. While you’re checking into that one, think about the last time you updated it. Is it a pain to update? Do you just not have time? It may be time to have someone manage your website so that it always looks fresh. Along those lines, does your website take forever to load? The golden rule is: if your website is taking longer than 5 seconds to load, it’s not working. For anyone.
Perhaps also your third-party tools are also outdated, such as shopping cart widgets, etc. You have to take a hard look at them; are they working, or just slowing the site speed down? More than likely, there are new-and-improved versions available; you just have to find them. Everyone seems to know a little bit about search engines….do they know about you? The big search engines (Google, Yahoo, Bing) can work for you if you know how to align yourself. Make sure you optimize your site properly. You may want to have an SEO expert do this on a monthly basis.
Now let’s take a look at your social media platforms. Social media ideas, this time of year, can be downright fun. There are ideas galore for this ghoulish season, and we talked about some tried-and-true trick-or-treat sure-winners:
Monsters and people alike love the cute costume or photo contest. Host a fun photo competition leading up to Halloween, be it cute pet costumes, kid costumes, etc. Encourage all your followers to share their spookiest and festive photo; you’ll be amazed at what you’ll receive. Set up a system to judge the entrants for the winner, and be sure to have a prize for the winner, that will get more people to participate. Try this on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other networks as well.
Keep your Facebook updates spooky leading up to Halloween; they do draw a higher level of attention when they hit others news feeds. You could also make it interactive; ask people their favorite scary soundtrack or their favorite classic horror movie. (using photos and Utube links) The more fun and engaging your material is, the further it will reach.
Also keep your Twitter truly terrifying. Use Twitter to test a hashtag contest, in the spirit of Halloween. Share other people’s content while keeping your own fresh; this will drive traffic to your feed.
Another idea is making your business location a trick-or-treat stop, and advertise it on all your social media mediums. Be sure to have fun treats ready for anyone who stops by, and don’t forget to have them “check-in” to your location while they are there!
Another trick to put in your treat bag is to offer up a discount as a “treat” for Halloween. Keep it simple, maybe just 15 or 20% off for someone who “likes” your page. Or offer a promo code; Scared of your high phone bill? Use this coupon for MONSTER savings, etc.
And don’t forget to have fun! Tying your social media ideas to a holiday can be a fun and easy way to market. So….Ready…Set….Boo!
